The chairman and principal investor of 3S International says the processing company's future is bright, despite a recent filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In an interview with E-Scrap News, W. Sidney Smith was frank about the company's early struggles. But he held firm that 3S would find a way to profitability utilizing its three automated processing machines for mercury-containing flat-panel display (FPD) TVs and monitors.

New estimates on the time it takes for a flat-panel display TV to enter the U.K. waste stream have been released.

The findings, determined by WRAP, an influential waste reduction and recycling nonprofit group based in the U.K., suggest the average life span of flat-panel display televisions is about 10 years. Life-span estimates are critical in estimating when devices will begin appearing in the recycling stream.

Sage Sustainable Electronics this week announced it acquired Hugo Neu Recycling, which is based in New York. The deal was a non-cash transaction, according to Sage CEO Bob Houghton. Hugo Neu will become a wholly owned Sage subsidiary.

After closing and consolidating operations in North America and the U.K., the e-scrap business of Sims Metals Management has posted promising results.

Results from the recently completed 2015 fiscal year (FY), which ran from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015, show increased revenues from Sims' tightened global e-scrap operations. Revenues from the e-scrap wing of the company, Sims Recycling Solutions (SRS), totaled about $795 million in Australian dollars ($557 million in U.S. dollars).

Dynamic Recycling has purchased some of the assets of the defunct e-scrap company Materials Processing Corp.

Onalaska, Wis.-based Dynamic purchased Materials Processing Corp.'s (MPC) intangible assets, including customer lists, its enterprise system and salesforce contacts, Dynamic Recycling CEO Miles Harter told E-Scrap News. It also bought a baler and is looking to purchase forklifts, he said.

An Oregon-based e-scrap processor says government regulation practices and tough commodity markets have led the company to relocate shredding operations to Texas. Export Global Metals (EG Metals) has battled with state environmental regulators over compliance with stormwater regulations at its Portland, Ore.-area facility. The state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in January fined the company, alleging it exposed e-scrap to the elements. EG Metals disputed the allegation and appealed the fine. As of Aug.
