Flat-panel display processor 3S International has closed its operations in Illinois and Michigan and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with hopes of reorganizing the company.

In a statement sent to E-Scrap News, CEO Joe Yob said bankruptcy will "allow 3S to strategically reposition the company to better meet the current and future needs for the recycling of panel displays and other mercury-containing electronics."

Millions of pounds of CRT devices abandoned by Utah's Stone Castle Recycling continue to plague local communities.

According to a pair of articles appearing April 5 in the Salt Lake Tribune, six former locations of Stone Castle remain piled high with CRT devices. Company CEO Anthony Stoddard "has not paid for any of his defunct recycling centers or their cleanup," the newspaper states.

Publicly traded E-Waste Systems has been ruled in default in a lawsuit alleging the firm did not pay workers at its former Ohio processing location.

According to court documents reviewed by E-Scrap News, a total of nine employees have joined the suit, which was originally filed on Nov. 25 and alleges E-Waste Systems (EWSI) failed to pay them "and others similarly situated" for hours worked, including overtime, between Oct. 17 and Nov. 18 of 2014. The employees were then promptly laid off without warning or pay, court documents charge.
